BathTub Test

During a visit to the mental hospital, I asked the Director 'How do you determine whether or not a patient should be admitted to the hospital.'

'Well,' said the Director, 'we fill up a bathtub, then we give a
teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him to empty the bathtub.'

'Oh, I understand,' I said. 'A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup.'

Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

The notion that bigger is better has taken a beating lately in all aspects of society.

Once the pride of the so-called upper middle class in the United States, McMansions and SUVs have now become symbols of excess and waste--at least the reminders of an era past. Green movement proponents should certainly be happy that so many “earth abusers” are beginning to see the light, but what about performance-computing fanatics? With memory prices near record lows, is there any good reason not to fill every slot with low-cost 2 GB DIMMs?

High Tech Recall History: What Dell Learned From Intel

Thu Aug 17, 2006 10:47AM EDT

See Comments (0)

Hard to believe that it was more than 20 years ago, but Michael Dell was still just a kid when the computer industry saw its first jaw dropping recall. As Wikipedia tells it, in 1994 Professor Thomas Nicely, then at Lynchburg College, reported a bug in the Pentium floating point unit. His original memo to Intel reported that certain division operations returned a value which was wrong by a very small amount. This result was quickly verified by other people around the Internet and became known as the Pentium FDIV bug.

The Internet (a much smaller, but no less contentious place) buzzed with angry folks corroborating Nicely's findings. Intel was caught by surprise with no guidebook or disaster communications plan. The company's first reaction? Deny the problem existed.

Later, as the fervor increased, Intel announced a recall and extended an offer to replace all flawed Pentium processors. It could have been a very expensive recall, but the reality was that very few people took Intel up on the offer. The kick-off of the recall came from Andy Grove, then president of Intel, who sent one of the greatestmea culpas of all time. In his sincere apologies came redemption and a rise in Intel's stock price. Ultimately Intel gained a huge thumbs up for the public admission of error, even though it was determined that most users would never be affected by this bug.

Dell's laptop battery problems echo Intel's chip problems. Both made enormous noise on the web and would in fact probably not affect all that many people. Dell's faulty battery stands the chance of costing the companies a great deal of money.

IBM aims to bolster partnerships amid weak economy

NEW YORK (Reuters) -

IBM said on Tuesday it is seeking to bolster sales partnerships to boost revenue in a weak economy and compete more effectively with other large technology firms.

International Business Machines Corp, which sells computer servers as well as software and technology services, said that more cooperation among equipment and software vendors can help corporate customers invest in technology more efficiently, such as by preventing the duplication of hardware.

Rivals like computing and software maker Hewlett-Packard Co and network equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc have also announced myriad partnerships in recent months, from licensing deals to stronger sales tie-ups to offer clients more comprehensive, "one-stop shop"-like services.

"Clients' needs are clear: save money, preserve capital and reduce costs," Chief Executive Officer Sam Palmisano said in a speech to the company's business partners. "With your partnership, we help them do that ... You are critical to IBM's success."

Around 30 percent of IBM's sales go through its 100,000 channel partners, who he

SKorea pinpoints 20 illegal NKorean bank accounts

SEOUL, South Korea – South Korea has informed the U.S. of up to 20North Korean bank accounts suspected of being involved in counterfeiting, money laundering and other illegal transactions, a news report said Wednesday.

The move came as Washington considered punishing the North with its own financial sanctions apart from proposed U.N. sanctions. Seven key nations neared agreement on a new U.N. resolution that would toughen sanctions against North Korea for defying the Security Counciland conducting a second nuclear test.

South Korea gave the U.S. the information on some 10 to 20 North Korean bank accounts in China and Switzerland at Washington's request, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported, citing an unidentified government official.

Separately, South Korea's Finance Ministry has imposed sanctions on three North Korean companies for helping the country's April 5 long-range rocket test. The move was largely symbolic because the firms don't do business with South Korea.

What is Foreign Exchange?

What is Foreign Exchange?
For active traders and investors, foreign exchange should be no different than other investment products such as equities, commodities or fixed-income. Because of globalization in the economic world and consolidation of whole economic regions (i.e., the European Union), including currencies in a portfolio helps to diversify assets and can reduce risk.Just like other investment alternatives, foreign exchange offers traders/investors a market where they can buy or sell an investment product. In this case it is a specific Currency Pair. The currency pair may be the Euro versus the US Dollar, the US Dollar versus the Japanese Yen, the British Pound versus the US Dollar, the Euro versus British Pound, or a number of other currency combinations.
The different currency combinations represent nothing more than the value of one currency versus the value of another. That relationship is represented by a single price. In foreign exchange, the price of a currency pair is the market’s expectations (at that time) of the value of that currency measured against another currency given the current and expected economic and political situation in the two economies. In equity terms, it is the price of the stock.
If, for example, an economy’s inflation/interest rates are low and stable, if its output is growing strongly, or if its politics are stable and expectations are for more of the same, then one can expect (in general) for that country's currency to remain strong versus a less fundamentally favorable currency.Contrasting that with an equity, if the domestic and global economy is strong, if inflation is not rampant, if competition is not taking away market share or eating into margins, if product demand and growth are strong, of if the companies internal "politics" are such that the workers are happy and productive, and expectations are for more of the same, then you can expect that company’s stock to remain strong versus a company with less favorable fundamentals.
Similar to equities there are other factors that determine the short term value of a product including technical analysis, short term supply and demand, seasonal capital flow patterns, the current price of the instrument, etc. It is these universal dynamics that will move a currency’s value up or down. By analyzing the pricing dynamics and combining that with sound money management and discipline, the investor can ensure greater success in his or her foreign exchange trading.

Foreign Currency Symbols

Foreign Currency Symbols
Currencies, like equities, have their own symbols that distinguish one from another. Since currencies are quoted in terms of the value of one against the value of another, a currency pair includes the "name" for both currencies, separated by a "/". The "name" is a three letter acronym. The first two letters are in most cases reserved for identification of the country. The last letter is the first letter of the unit of currency for that country.
For example,
USD = United States Dollar
GBP = Great Britain Pound
JPY = Japanese Yen
CAD = Canadian Dollar
CHF = Confederatio Helvetica (Latin for Swiss Confederation) Franc
NZD = New Zealand Dollar
AUD = Australian Dollar
NOK = Norwegian Krona
SEK = Swedish Krona
Since the European Euro has no specific country attached to it, it goes simply by the acronym EUR.
By combining one currency, EUR, with another USD, you create a currency pair EUR/USD.

Introduction of Forex

Introduction
Although the foreign exchange market is the largest traded market in the world, its reach to the retail sector pales in comparison to the Equity and Fixed Income markets. This is in large part due to a general lack of awareness of FX in the investor community, along with as a lack of understanding of how and why currencies move. Adding to the mystique of this market is the lack of a physical central exchange akin to the NYSE or the CME. It is this very lack of structure that enables the FX markets to operate on a 24-hour basis, beginning the trading day in New Zealand and continuing through the time zones.
Traditionally, access to the FX market was limited to the bank community that traded large blocks of currencies for commercial, hedging, or speculative purposes. The creation of well-capitalized firms like FXDD has opened the door of Forex trading to such institutions as funds and money managers, as well as to the individual retail trader. This sector of the market has grown exponentially over the past several years.

How does a Forex Expert Advisor work ?
The program works by calculating the different indicators that it was designed to use and take actions when the market conditions meet the correct criteria as described in the source code of the Expert Advisor. Fore Example. A simple expert advisor may say something like this: "If the 9 and 20 day moving averages cross with the 9 day MA above the 20 MA and the RSI is higher than 50 then open a long position (buy)" That is just an example. You can assign countless conditions for entering and exiting the market as well as managing trades for trailing stops and multiple take profit levels. An MT-4 Expert Advisor is usually divided into three parts: A startup or ‘init’ function, a main function and a ‘deinit’ or cleanup function. The Expert Advisor will run through its startup function once upon startup and will run through its ‘deinit’ or clean-up function once at the end. In the mean time, the MT-4 Expert Advisor program runs through a cycle of its main function over and over with every incoming tick while it is attached to a chart and active. Once running, the Expert Advisor will not start another cycle for a new tick if it is still in the middle of processing the previous one. Here is a simple outline of what a simple expert advisor could be programmed to do. (This would be the 'main' part of the EA and takes place every time a tick comes in.) 1- Check my account. Is there enough equity to open a trade? if so, continue. If not, end. 2- Are there any open trades right now? 2a- If there are, do they need to be closed or do they need their trailing stop adjusted? (do so if needed and exit.) 2b- If there are no open trades, are the market conditions right to open one? (do so if needed and exit. ) 3- End.

Microsoft and Intel may trim netbook sizes with Windows 7

One of the more fascinating aspects of the netbook phenomenon today is how the market segment has grown and adapted over the last couple of years. Originally all netbooks were humble laptops with tiny, 8.9-inch screens and baby-finger-sized keyboards, but recently manufacturers have been pushing those machines and screen sizes larger. 10.2-inch became the new standard late last year, and now 11.6- and 12.1-inch screens are becoming popular -- namely because they're large enough to substitute for a regular laptop on which you can do "real" work. From there it's only a quick hop to 13.3 inches, which is the realm of the mainstream, ultralight PC.

Now comes news that manufacturers may have a hard time making larger netbooks if Intel and Microsoft have their way. According to one source (unsubstantiated at present), the two companies are conspiring to limit the maximum size of what qualifies as a netbook to machines with a 10.2-inch screen.

Suspense builds ahead of Apple extravaganza

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -

Apple Inc kicks off its annual developers' extravaganza on Monday under a tight lid of secrecy, with investors expecting the electronics maker to unveil new or cheaper versions of its popular iPhone.

Thousands of customers, developers and investors are set to convene in San Francisco for Apple's Worldwide Developers' Conference, hoping to catch a glimpse of its latest high-tech wonders.

But while Apple made waves with its unveiling of the 3G iPhone at last year's event, this year's takes place against a more uncertain backdrop.

Steve Jobs, Apple's charismatic CEO and master showman, is still on medical leave and not due back until July. And the first credible challenger to Apple's iPhone, Palm Inc's new Pre smartphone, makes its grand debut on store shelves just two days before Apple's gala.

It's not a netbook!

Q: How do you make the world stop buying so many netbooks?

A: Stop calling them netbooks.

That's the bizarre advice from Microsoft, suggested by one corporate overlord at this week's Computex trade show in Taipei.

His beef? The term "netbook" implies a notebook that is useful only for surfing the net, but since today's mini-notebooks do so much more than just that, the term should be retired.

His suggestion for replacing the term? The exquisitely Microsoftian "low cost small notebook PC."

Semantics in this space are getting increasingly complicated, though whether you call them netbooks, mini-notebooks, smartbooks, or, ahem, low cost small notebook PC, most of these machines do pretty much the same stuff. (The only real difference in this group is the smartbook, a term which is now being used to describe a notebook-type machine that runs a smart phone operating system like Android or, someday, the iPhone OS.)

Obama using online tools to advance Cairo speech

(CNN) -- A day before President Obama was to give a widely anticipated speech in Cairo, Egypt, the administration was using online networking tools to further reach out to the Muslim world.

This government site invites people to receive highlights of the president's speech via text message.

This government site invites people to receive highlights of the president's speech via text message.

"In the spirit of engagement, we invited the international audience to submit comments via text message," reads a page at America.gov, which will begin posting messages as soon as Obama's speech begins, about 6:10 a.m. ET Thursday.

People at the site may also sign up to receive text-message highlights from the speech. The service is available only for people living outside the United States.

The form is available in English, Arabic, Persian and Urdu.

Obama's speech, which he will deliver at the Great Hall at Cairo University to an anticipated crowd of about 3,000, will be an effort to improve the image of the United States among Muslims. That image has been tarnished in the eyes of many of the world's estimated 1 billion Muslims who have been critical of the U.S. role in the Middle East over the past few years.

Yes, Windows 7 Starter Edition is headed for U.S. computers

I'll readily admit I sometimes get it wrong. I've written well over 2,000 of these posts, and once in awhile I goof it up.

And so I took a long, hard look at comments calling me out over my complaints about Windows 7 Starter Edition, some claiming that the OS was not due to be released in the USA.

Said one writer: "Chris, are you constantly posting about Starter Edition and netbooks to annoy me intentionally? At this time there is no proof (netbooks shipping with Starter Edition in the US) to say that Starter Edition will come on netbooks. And the policy for Starter Edition has always been for developing countries -- and that we have proof of." And another: "Starter Edition has not been intended for US release to my knowledge. I'm very sure it was intended for developing countries."

Yahoo! doesn't need Microsoft deal: CEO

NEW YORK (AFP) – Yahoo! chief executive Carol Bartz played down speculation of an Internet search tie-up with Microsoft saying the Web pioneer did not need to make a deal with the software giant.

"Yahoo! doesn't have to do anything with Microsoft about anything," Bartz said at a conference here of technology analysts.

"Yahoo! actually has a bright, bright future, probably cleaner and simpler future without thinking there's any Microsoft connection," she said. "We'd be better off if we'd never heard the word Microsoft.

"Forget about the Microsoft stuff, it's honestly not that relevant," she said.

Microsoft tried last year to buy Yahoo! for 47.5 billion dollars in a vain effort to merge online resources to better battle Google, which rules more than 60 percent of the lucrative US online search market.

Microsoft, Sony take aim at Nintendo Wii at E3

LOS ANGELES – This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo has been quite the moving experience.

During presentations at the video game industry trade show, bothMicrosoft and Sony debuted prototype motion-control devices for theXbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that could rival Nintendo's popular Wii, the first console to employ a motion-detecting controller when it debuted in 2006.

Nintendo said Wednesday they are flattered by the imitations.

"It's certainly nice for us to see other companies adopting the philosophy that Nintendo communicated back a few years ago," said Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America. "For us, we're really pleased and excited to bring consumers the next advancement now with Wii MotionPlus."
